Before the Controvers'Ye

I remember first learning of the infamous Kanye West.  An up-and-coming Producer/Emcee; making hits for top recording artists left and right, alleged Roc-a-Fella successor, tastemaker, beat-builder, curious, foolish, and hungry.  I quickly became intrigued by the skill, flair, and individuality of a man that may also be a history-maker.

I easily became a fan, simple and plain.  I followed, listened, and did my own research.  On his way to becoming somebody, Kanye appeared on Def Poetry Jam numerous times.  The following videos are his appearances in chronological order, all before each of his first three album releases -- respectively.

1st Video - Almost a year before the release of The College Dropout.  Blew me away; his dynamic, delivery, thoughtful outfit, gestures, etc.  I thought, "Damn, this guy's good."  Mos Def excalimed, "...the future of Hip-Hop..."

2nd Video - About 5 months after the release of The College Dropout.  I thought, "Nice, he's doing well and still drops by DPJ."

3rd Video - Same year Late Registration was released (not sure before or after).  My thoughts -- "Dope, he's killin'em right now."

Do you see progression...or digression?  What you see and understand may determine how you really feel.  I was/am an avid listener, follower, fan.  I couldn't wait to see what else this guy had in store.  Despite his ability to stir up controversy, I can't deny his artistry.

If you don't have any haters, you may not be doing anything worthwhile.

For the record, this is not in his defense.  Recognize and Respect; Love'em or Hate'em -- he's already made a difference.

"Stay curious, stay foolish, stay hungry."
