Barbershop Style Guide | The Snowboarder

For those of you who are just getting into the addicting sport of snowboarding, I put together a basic lineup of snowboarding softgoods and hardgoods to prepare you properly for the mountain action.  Check out the breakdown after the jump.

Layering Basics

Base Layer
Possibly the most important layer to consider is the layer next to your skin.

  • The base layer must be constructed of wicking material to keep your skin dry, in turn keeping you warm.
  • Basic base layer consist of long underwear bottoms, tops, and socks.
  • Common base layer is made of synthetic polyester or a polypropylene material.

 Mid Layer
The middle layer is also recommended to be made of wicking material (but not vital) to keep the moisture moving away from your skin.

  • Sweaters, thermals, hoodies, and vests are typical mid layers. (combining is recommended)
  • Common mid layer materials are fleece and wool.

 Outer Layer/Shell
Helps keep out the elements in bad weather.

  • Snowboard pants and snowboard jackets are considered the outer layer.
  • Should be made up of a waterproof, breathable material.
  • Arm vents, leg vents and a powder skirt are recommended.

 Accessories
The final key touches to keeping dry and warm.

  • A hat or helmet is crucial not only for safety but because most of your heat loss will happen through your head.
  • A neck gator and/or face mask is recommended to protect your face and neck when the temperature drops.
  • Gloves or mittens are also a must to keep your hands dry and warm.  I recommend finding a pair with long gauntlets to keep out the snow.
  • Mittens keep your hands warmer
  • Liners recommended.
  • Goggles are a must to keep the cold air away from your eyes esp. at higher speeds and snowfall.  Look for a pair with good peripherals.
